The people of Cuba are very friendly and welcome visitors to see and enjoy the "Pearl of the Antilles". There are severe penalties meted out to Cubans who commit crimes against tourists. Police and informants are keep petty criminals in line. Nonetheless, travelers should be cautious in dimly lit areas of cities late at night. Pickpockets are also a nuisance in tourist areas.
